Mark Carota, Chair of the Chelmsford Select Board, has resigned.
Carota submitted his resignation in a letter to Town Clerk Patricia Dzuris Sunday (see letter below), citing personal reasons for the decision. The news was then formally announced by Vice Chair Pat Wojtas at the beginning of last night’s Town Meeting.
At this time, the reasons why remain a mystery.
As for who replaces Carota, whose term was set to expire in April of 2024, the remaining four members of the Select Board will need to formally select a new chair at the September 25th meeting. Till then, Wojtas will be acting Chair.
As for filling the seat itself, succession is governed by the Town Charter (3-1) and MA General Law Chapter 41.
The Select Board must then decide whether to hold a Special Election to fill the remainder of Carota’s term or function with just four members until the Election.
