Greg Hudon is now officially the Police Superintendent for the City of Lowell, taking the oath of office shortly after 10am this morning in a ceremony held at Lowell City Hall.

Hudon was sworn in by City Clerk, Michael Geary, with his family, city officials and other onlookers in attendance during a “small ceremony” held in the Mayor’s Reception Room. A larger, more formal event is planned in the future.

The new Chief was introduced by City Manager Tom Golden, who made the appointment over the weekend after interviewing three internal candidates for the post left open by Interim Superintendent Barry Golner’s retirement on April 30th.

In a short address to the crowd, Hudon was visibly emotional as he thanked his family and colleagues. He spoke of his appreciation for the efforts of everyone at the department, while also looking ahead to the work necessary to keep Lowell Police as a model of community policing.

Manager Golden tells InsideLowell he consulted with “a number of former Superintendents” as part of the selection process. One of those, happened to be Chief when Hudon began his career at with LPD in June of 1998.

“I’ve known Greg Hudon since he was a young man growing up in Centralville,” said former Lowell Police Superintendent and Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. “Greg has excelled at every level of the Lowell Police Department, where he has spent nearly his entire law enforcement career. He possesses all the attributes one would want in a leader, and I am confident City Manager Golden has made an excellent choice to head the department going forward.”
