Scott Boyle, a star athlete at Lowell High School and one of the most successful coaches in its rich history, has once again been named Head Coach of the school’s football program.
Boyle previously patrolled the Red Raiders sideline from 1997-2006, amassing a 68-37-2 record. The 68-wins place him third on the all-time list, trailing only the legendary Ray Riddick (182) and Walter Nelson (73). Boyle’s teams won 8-games in four of his last five seasons at the helm. His final team in 2006 lost out on a playoff berth his final year due to a coin flip tie-breaker.
“Scott was a great choice, he’s going to do well,” says LHS Athletic Director Scot Ouellet. “We had an incredible group of applicants and went through a thorough process to produce a great group of finalists. We couldn’t go wrong with any of the choices. But in the end, Scott being a teacher in Lowell for 25-years and serving as a coach previously was probably a factor that helped separate him, along with his great football resume.”
Boyle spent last year as Defensive Coordinator Bentley College. Before that, he coached at St. Anselm and Fitchburg State.
His departure as LHS coach in 2006 created waves in the Mill City, as he was told he could not coach both the football and basketball squads despite great success in doing so. Boyle eventually chose basketball, before eventually stepping away from that job in the summer of 2013.
He replaces Shy Cullen on the sidelines.
