This week we are highlighting one of the longest running organizations we know of, The Greater Lowell Family YMCA, which was founded in 1865! Imagine they are stronger than ever and meeting the needs of families and individuals for 167 years and yet there is still the misconception that The Y is just a gym. I assure you it is not! Some highlights of their mission are to promote and inspire lifelong development for children, adults, and families through
Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.
Youth Development and Healthy Living are their biggest impacts in the community. They offer childcare for ages 2.9 months – 13 years old at their preschool site and 6 after school program sites as well as 2 summer camp sites that serve children ages 5 to 15 years old. Fitness programs are available for all ages, LIVESTRONG for cancer survivors, sports, arts, and aquatic programs (did you know they teach 100s of adults and children how to swim?). So much activity going on, supporting so many individuals. In addition, they collaborate with other area non-profits to support the community in ways they cannot themselves. Holding fundraising events, supply, clothing, and other drives during the year. In the future they are hoping to find partners to work with where they can support mental health service programs and food insecurity programs building on their focus of Social Responsibility.
Like many other organizations they are facing some staffing challenges with filling open positions and finding qualified individuals.
The Y is very proud to welcome everyone regardless of their financial situation. They award almost $500,000 in financial aid every year and have been able to do so with the help of staff, members and community supporters who donate to their annual scholarship campaign.
As you can imagine it also takes significant resources to keep the facility running in top condition, make improvements and changes, keep equipment up to date, focus on the safety of their staff and members. As of late they have made many improvements to the building inside and out.
Help them continue their legacy and support to so many children and families. Those interested in donating can do so online at their website greaterlowellymca.org, mailing a check or contacting their CEO, Kevin Morrissey, at (978)454-7825 ext. 816.
Please donate today. If you prefer to mail a check:

This is an institution in Lowell. Thank you for highlighting it Ellen.
It sure is, Lisa, and people really don’t know they are so much more than a gym. Thank you.
