InsideDracut: “Middies Pride” at a Crossroads

High school athletics is an integral part of education, especially for those students who would not stay in school if they didn’t have sports. But not only do sports help keep student focused on completing high school it is an important piece to the puzzle for those seeking higher education through athletic scholarships. Athletics helps with behavioral issues but just as important it drives school spirit!

That is why we support high school sports to the max!

It is also why yesterday, on our “What’s Happening Dracut” Facebook page I reported that I was hearing from very reliable sources that the fate of Dracut High School Football season is in serious jeopardy and that an announcement will be forthcoming.

The decision to “cancel” the Middies Football season is due to very low numbers of participants in the Dracut High school Football program. There were approximately 23 student athletes that signed up for the season. It was expected that 6-8 more would come on board once school started. Since the team has been preparing for the season, the team has lost a couple players who decided it was not for them in addition to loosing another to injury. The number of participants is standing at a very low 18 as of now. A very dangerous number to begin a season with.

It was reported that a move to merge with Innovation Academy, where there are an estimated 20 students that would be interested has been killed by Superintendent Steven Stone. Why Superintendent Stone would not approve a merger that would keep football at Dracut High is mindboggling. Especially when, I am told that Innovation was excited and “on board” with the merge. I have reached out to Superintendent Stone for comment and will update this story when I hear from him.

I know that the Dracut High School Football Coaching staff has been working tirelessly to recruit more players with minimal success.

This will surely make Dracut Football Alumni and boosters very upset as they are very passionate about DHS football tradition.

A final push by the current coaching staff and the team to get more participants is currently underway but the prospects of a football season at DHS is looking very bleak.

Stay tuned……
