May 4, 2024 marks the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. This incredible event is not only celebrated with a weeklong schedule of activities but people in communities everywhere use it as a reason to party. Put on your prettiest fascinator and have some friends over to watch the race.
When the warmth of May comes it also reminds me that it’s time to sample some rose’ wines.
As you probably know there are differing opinions of where the best roses are sourced. Provence, France is likely the best producing region for quality rose’.
For myself, many roses regardless of where they are made, are too light and have little substance. I have sampled so many, looking for something well, special. Rose’ made from pinot noir grapes, grenache and sometimes a blend tend to be the most flavorful.
We have discussed this subject before and many friends chimed in with suggestions they love.
The only way to get to “what you like” is by tasting..there’s really no other way. I guess that’s not the worst punishment.
One US rose’ I like is SOFIA from the Coppola collection from California. Aptly named after Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter. It has hints of pomegranate and bright raspberry. At 13% alcohol it is right up there with white and red wines, so not sweet and with a pleasant aroma.
Say cheers to trying rose’ with some light appetizers and settle in for the derby and spring.
