With the impending departure of Dr. Joel Boyd as Lowell Schools Superintendent, many in the Lowell Public Schools community are once again pining for times gone by. Unfortunately for them, the current Chelmsford School Superintendent isn’t singing Auld Lang Syne, the classic New Year’s Eve tune,
Jay Lang, who recently inkned a 6-year contract extension to continue as the leader of Chelmsford Public Schools, nipped speculation that he might be returning to the Mill City right in the bud when contacted about the potential this morning.
“I deeply valued my time with Lowell Public Schools; the city and school system will always have a special place in my heart,” said Lang. “However, I am genuinely happy and fulfilled in my current position with Chelmsford Public Schools. I am excited and energized by the great work we’re doing here, as well as the milestones we have yet to reach. So, while I appreciate being thought of for the Lowell Superintendent position, right now I have no interest in being anywhere else and would not entertain a move at this time.”
Lang, who spent 20-years in the Lowell Public School system, was passed over for the top job in favor of Salah Khelfaoui in May of 2015. Chelmsford, which was about to begin its own search for a Superintendent, immediately halted that process to recruit Lang for the post. The two sides quickly entered into negotiations by the end of May, with Lang officially appointed shortly thereafter.
Since that time, Lang’s name continuously comes up in discussions about future Lowell school leaders. Last week’s news that Boyd is leaving for Philadelphia renewed the chatter, which will now turn to other potential names as the School Committee will have to begin the process of replacing him.

He’s no dummy.
Danny, do you think we would have had a better chance of luring Jay back if we had a new High School at Cawley?
Congratulations and well deserved Jay!
I’ve know Jay for a very long time. He’s smart, savvy and knows how to make smart decisions. He’s doing just fine in Chelmsford and a great asset to the Town and the kids.
