The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has finally commented publicly regarding the timeline for migrant families moving into the Inn & Conference Center. InsideLowell reported last night the process would begin today.
“The Inn and Conference Center will begin providing emergency shelter to unhoused families starting this week,” said General Scott Rice, the State’s Emergency Assistance Director. “We are grateful to the University of Massachusetts Building Authority, the City of Lowell, and Manager Golden for their partnership in this effort to support families experiencing homelessness. We also continue to recognize the importance of the ICC to the greater-Lowell community and will engage with the University to develop a long-term plan for the site that meets the needs of the city and its residents.”
The statement was part of an email revealing a few more details and confirming that Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA) would be the contracted service provider with assistance from Community Teamwork Incorporated (CTI), confirming our report on November 30, 2023.
The state plans to use up to 250 rooms for sheltering families with children or pregnant individuals and will not be open to the public while it is being used as an emergency shelter. No homeless individuals will be placed at this site. Homeless families and individuals seeking shelter should not go directly to the ICC site.
All referrals for placement must be made by state staff through the EA family shelter program. Eligible families can apply for EA emergency shelter here: https://www.mass.gov/how-to/apply-for-ea-emergency-family-shelter
CCA will provide direction for community donations and volunteer opportunities. The state requests that community members do not drop off donations at the ICC at this time.
