UMass Lowell and City of Lowell officials welcomed the LINC project development team last night at a gathering that also featured a wide range of community leaders.
UML Chancellor Julie Chen and City Manager Tom Golden introduced many of the top executives involved in the transformative project and invited those in attendance to share their thoughts on the development and what it means to the community.
While details of the discussions were not revealed, Chen did refer to high-level and productive meetings taking place earlier in the day, yet another sign that the much anticipated evolution of the University’s East Campus are progressing nicely.
Adam Baacke, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management & Maintenance, was also in attendance, as was UMass Building Authority Chair, Mary Burns.
City Manager Tom Golden addressed the LINC team and the crowd, expressing how important the development is to the city’s future. A number of city councilors were dropped into the session, which lasted about two and a half hours and was designed to allow attendees to pop in and out as their schedules permitted.
LINC is an $800-million, $1-million square foot development slated to bring more than 2,000 new jobs and $4-$6 million in new tax revenue to the Mill City.
Already, Draper and Mass General Brigham have committed to adding workforce and partnering with the University. Draper has actually moved employees into the Wannalancit Mills complex while awaiting for construction of the new buildings to be completed.
A number of other well-known companies in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Space, Cybersecurity and Robotics are also rumored in talks to shift or expand operations to the area.

Too bad the general public wasn’t invited or informed.
I guess our leaders will tell us everything we need to know when we need to know it.
This is a University project on University property that benefits the city of Lowell by creating jobs and bringing in innovative high paying companies.
