The $6-million LeLacheur Park cash appropriation, which got caught in a rundown over the summer and thrown out in the Massachusetts State Senate, is back in action on Beacon Hill.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives once again approved the funding, this time as part of their closeout spending bill. The bill now heads to the Senate, where approval could be granted within a matter of days, barring any opposition from that chamber.
A source on Beacon Hill tells InsideLowell there is reason for optimism this time around, given the supplemental spending bill passed less than an hour after the House and Senate reached agreement on a long-sought after clean energy bill, indicating discussions between the bodies on both pieces of legislation led to some common ground.
Unlike this past summer, when the ballpark funding failed to move forward, there also appears to be a more coordinated effort on the part of the Mill City’s State House delegation and United States Congresswoman Lori Trahan.
Trahan has made it a priority to bring affiliated minor league baseball back to LeLacheur Park and Lowell. The 3rd District Representative’s camp believes the $6-million, combined with funding already committed by UMass Lowell and the federal government, is “enough to get the commitments necessary” to bring a Boston Red Sox affiliate back to the city.
Our story last month about the ballpark funding also touched on the Red Sox long-season Double-A affiliate in Salem, Virginia. Since Minor League Baseball’s realignment after the lost COVID season of 2020 that eliminated the Lowell Spinners, there has been plenty of speculation about the Salem team’s relocation. That speculation has heightened recently given the timing of their lease to play in Salem and the fact they were purchased in 2023 by the same ownership group that owns the Worcester Red Sox, Portland (Maine) Sea Dogs and Manchester (New Hampshire) Fisher Cats.
One response to “LeLacheur Funding Back in the Ballpark”
Obviously, we would all love to see a Single A Red Sox affiliate team come back to Lowell. LeLacheur Park is such a lovely stadium. It’s a shame for it to not be fully utilized.
Go Spinners!!!
