Liang Jumps into Acre Race

Sidney Liang, who in March told InsideLowell he was contemplating a run for City Council, has pulled paperwork to officially enter the race.

Liang filed paperwork with the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF) yesterday to run for the District 7 (Acre) seat currently held by Paul Ratha Yem.

Jose Cervantes has also filed paperwork to campaign for the same seat. If both challengers complete the process this summer of gathering enough signatures to get on the ballot, a preliminary election to narrow the field down to two candidates for the November 4 general election will be held on Tuesday, September 9.

This past Thursday night, Liang posted a Facebook photograph of himself at the elections office in Lowell City Hall. Friday morning, he filed his campaign’s organizational statement with OCPF.

“Today, I prepared a job application to be your next City Councilor for District 7,” Liang wrote on his Facebood post. “I am a little nervous. It’s a first step, but I will need your support along the way. It won’t be easy, but this is also your endeavor, and with you and your voices, we can do it. Watch out for more information in the coming days and months. How can we make District 7 better? You tell me. We’ll do it together. You voice is my voice. Let’s do this!”

The Phillips Street resident was a Senior Program Director at the Lowell Community Health Center for 25-years, a tenure that ended this past February.

He currently serves as Vice President of the Board at Lowell Telemedia Corporation (LTC) and on the Board at Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA). Liang’s campaign organization lists recently retired CBA Executive Director Yun Ju Choi as its Treasurer.

Saturday afternoon, Liang also posted on his Facebook page about being appointed to the Middlesex Community College Board of Trustees by Governor Maura Healey.
