Motorboat Club Celebrates 150 Years of Boating in Lowell

Lowell – In 1875 eight men got together and formed a club to enjoy one of the greatest gifts that runs through the City of Lowell, the Merrimack River. The mission of the club was to give “the working man” a place to enjoy boating on the Merrimack River.

This year, the Lowell Motor Boat Club celebrates its 150th anniversary.

While much has changed over the years, the mission remains the same: offering members cost-effective access to recreational boating, and a welcoming place to enjoy boating and all that comes with it.

The Lowell Motor Boat Club was incorporated in 1937 and a year later the original clubhouse was destroyed during the flood of 1938 that ravaged much of the City of Lowell. A year later, it was rebuilt at 487 Pawtucket Street.

Throughout its history, the Lowell Motor Boat Club has provided important services to the community, including providing 24/7 access to the Lowell Fire Department and serving as the home port for the Lowell Police Department’s “River One” patrol boat at no cost to the city.

The club is also a strong advocate for boating safety, hosting U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary safe boating classes and helping to prepare the boating community for changes to Massachusetts law.

Beginning in April 2026, Massachusetts will require a safe boating certificate for boaters born after January 1, 1989 and boat operators of all ages will be required to have a safe boating certificate beginning April 2028.
