The rest of the world is catching on to something many around these parts have been well aware of for a long time; Lowell is the best place to live in Massachusetts and the ranked number three in the entire Northeast.

A March 17 story in Travel + Leisure Magazine highlighted the most recent Livability.com rundown last November of the best places to live in America, which placed the Mill City in third place behind only Clifton, New Jersey and Warwick, Rhode Island. Livability has been focusing on small and mid-sized cities in America for over 30-years, and in 2024, ranked Lowell eighth overall in the Northeast.

With Travel + Leisure picking up the story, the exposure is sure to amplify the city’s profile to those unaware of all this now 200-year old community has to offer.

Lowell’s ability to weave its industrial history into modern amenities, along with being home to higher education institutions like UMass Lowell and Middlesex Community College are mentioned as adding to its rich culture.

The Travel + Leisure article mentions the transition of Massachusetts’ fifth largest city from textile production to era where healthcare and manufacturing economy are the top industries, while also successfully converting old, abandoned mill building into housing and incorporating its waterways into the National Park.
