While official confirmation will come later today with the posting of the August 10 Select Board meeting agenda,”inside” sources tells us Chelmsford and it’s newly selected Town Manager, Alex Magee, have finally come to terms on a contract.
One month after unanimously voting to offer him the position over the other finalist, Thomas Gregory, the Board will officially present Magee at its next meeting and announce his start date as Monday, August 31.
Chelmsford’s incoming Manager was most recently employed as Deputy Town Manager in Andover from September of 2025 through February of 2026. He got his start in municipal government with the City of Lowell in 2014, working his way up the ladder from Application Specialist in the MIS Department to Data Management Analyst in the office of then City Manager Eileen Donoghue.
He became Assistant to Manager Donoghue in 2019 before moving on to Deputy Director in the Public Works Department. There, he worked under DPW Commissioner Christine Clancy, who now serves as Director of DPW/Facilities in Chelmsford.
Magee will take over the reins from Interim Town Manager John Sousa, who was appointed to the position upon long-time Manager Paul Cohen’s departure on May 25, 2026.
Update: Terms of Magee’s contract revealed on the August 10 Meeting agenda call for a deal running through June 30, 2029 and starting at an annual salary of $225,000. The Select Board also waived the Residency Requirement for the term of the agreement. (Link to AlexMageeTownManagerContract)
