The last week has seen a trio of locals earn recognition for their efforts across the country in college athletics and in Hollywood.

Delane Leahy, the daughter of former Lowell Mayor John Leahy and his wife Joni, recently took home an Emmy Award as part of the special effects team on the series Spider-Noir.

The show, which premiered this past May on MGM+ and Prime Video and stars Nicolas Cage, earned the honor for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Single Episode during the 78th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 5 and 6.

The Primetime Emmy Awards show will be televised live this coming Monday, September 14 on NBC and Peacock.

Leahy, a 2015 Lowell High School graduate, got her start in the movie industry as a Production Assistant on the film “Patriots Day.” She currently resides in Los Angeles and works as a Visual Effects Producer and Freelance Director.

Across the coast, Eleni Stowell was recognized Tuesday as America East Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week.

Stowell scored two goals over two games last week for the University of Vermont. She notched her first career goal September 3 against Boston College, then followed that up with another in a 2-1 victory Sunday against St. Joseph’s.

The Freshman standout currently leads the Catamounts with two goals and four points across seven games this season.

Stowell, whose parents Stavroula and Craig both originally hail from Lowell, starred on the soccer pitch for Westford Academy.

She was named Team MVP in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons and in 2025 was named a Lowell Sun Player of the Year and Boston Globe All-Star.

Meanwhile, heading south to University of Georgia, Nathaniel Haley scored one for the boys, having just been named Captain of the Men’s Hockey Squad.

The 22-year old Lowell native, a Senior Forward for the Bulldogs,  netted a pair of goals in 25 games during the 2025-2026 season.

His leadership qualities earned him a “C” on the front of his jersey, a recognition that carries far more prestige in hockey than in most sports.

He is the son of John Haley, the CEO at Watermark, who in 2019 was honored as a Distinguished Alumni at Lowell High.
