Siblings Molly and Morgan Smith battled to the wire in the third and final round of the New England Women’s Amateur Championship today, with Morgan emerging victorious to capture her second consecutive title, courtesy of a furious late rally.
Molly had led the tournament since the opening round, with Morgan hot on the trail, just two shots off the pace entering final round play. After 9-holes today, that lead had increased to 4-strokes.
However, by the time they teed off on the final hole, the defending champ had pulled even, courtesy of a Birdie on the Par-4 17th. Morgan then secured the victory with a Par on the final hole while her sister carded a Bogey. She had won last year’s tournament by a whopping 12-strokes.
It was a remarkable finish and tournament for the Smith sisters, who continue to dominate the local women’s golf scene, and as evidenced this week, the New England women’s golf scene as well.
