Day 2 of nomination papers being available for Lowell candidates seeking municipal office brings another new face forward; Virak Uy.
Uy, the Director of the Program for Asian American Student Advancement at Middlesex Community College and Chairman of the Board for the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association, is running for a citywide seat.
He has previous election experience as a candidate for State Representative in the 14th Suffolk District out of Hyde Park in 2018. In 2014, Uy served as Campaign Manager for Rady Mom, who became the first Khmer elected State Rep in United States History.
The At-Large City Council race now boasts five declared candidates, just two short of the number needed to trigger a preliminary election that would be held on September 5th, the day after Labor Day. The others are incumbents Rita Mercier and Vesna Nuon, along with current District 8 Councilor Erik Gitschier and former two-term Councilor Corey Belanger.
