Butler School Students Stand Tall at Marathon Event

by Neyder Fernandez

Lowell – The Friday before school break was more than just the start of a long weekend; it was a Good Friday in every sense for Butler Middle School.

Under clear skies and spring sunshine, 30 of our dedicated students made their way to Boston for an unforgettable experience at the Boston Marathon pre-event.

Butler Middle School is proud to be the only school in Lowell invited to participate in this prestigious youth competition, drawing students from across Massachusetts. This unique opportunity allows our students not only to compete but also to stand tall among a larger athletic community.

For Principal Moody, this day holds personal meaning. A former sprinter, she describes the event as “a full circle moment,” reconnecting with old teammates, her original starter, and even her college coach, all while introducing a new generation to the joy and discipline of track and field.

“This is more than a race; it’s an experience,” she shared. “Our students are exposed to the legacy of the Boston Marathon, and they’re learning about sportsmanship, resilience, and community pride.”

The students represented Butler with grace and determination, displaying exceptional sportsmanship and teamwork. “Every year we hear, ‘Where’s Lowell?’ but by the end, they know exactly who we are,” said Moody with a smile. This year, Butler placed third overall, earning a spot in the official marathon celebration and leaving with hearts full and spirits high.

Parents came out in full support, embodying the school’s “All In for Butler” spirit. The students also had the unique privilege of crossing the famed Boston Marathon finish line before the world’s elite runners will on Monday.

Throughout the day, students learned not only about the mechanics of racing but also about the powerful history of the Boston Marathon. For a lucky few, it was their first time ever visiting the city.

“We don’t just teach content, we create opportunities,” said Moody. “Opportunities that expand our students’ vision of what’s possible.”

The Butler community left Boston beaming with pride. A day of joy, focus, and learning and a reminder that our students can go the distance.
