With this morning’s news from Gerry Nutter that he would not return papers to run for office, the upcoming Lowell School Committee election will feature just one contested race for the six seats available.
Nutter made the announcement during today’s Morning Show on 980 WCAP-AM, saying that after careful consideration with his family, he determined the time commitments required wouldn’t allow both a School Committee campaign and continuing as host of the show.
The District 2 race, which at one time looked like it would feature a preliminary election pitting incumbent Eileen DelRossi, Nutter and Bobby Tugbiyele against one another, now features no challengers to DelRossi, with today’s news and with Tugbiyele instead opting to run for City Council At-Large.
DelRossi is not the only School Committee candidate not facing a challenge.
At-Large members Jackie Doherty and Connie Martin are unopposed, as are incumbent Dominik Lay in District 4 (Acre and Lower Highlands) and former committee member Dave Conway in District 3 (Belvidere and South Lowell). The only contested race will be in District 1 (Pawtucketville and Upper Highlands) pitting incumbent Stacey Thompson against current Greater Lowell Regional School Committee Member Fred Bahou.
