Ty Chan, the Lowell kid who made it all the way to college football’s National Championship Game with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, is looking to play elsewhere next season.
Chan entered the NCAA’s transfer portal just days after the Fighting Irish lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes Monday night. The transfer portal was put in effect in 2018, allowing college athletes to switch schools without sacrificing a year of eligibility, as was previously the case.
The former Lowell High and Lawrence Academy star has two years of eligibility remaining. He is the fourth Notre Dame Offensive Lineman to enter the portal since the season concluded.
The online site Sportskeeda lists five potential landing spots for Chan. Among them is Boston College, where he had an offer to play college ball before committing to Notre Dame. The Eagles are said to to be his preferred landing spot.
Should BC Coach Bill O’Brien, the former New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator and Houston Texans Head Coach, be looking to fill a void in the O-line, Chan could be a nice fit and make a local connection. O’Brien was born in Dorchester, but grew up in nearby Andover.
Other possibilities close to home are rumored to be the University of Massachusetts and University of Connecticut. James Madison University, in Virginia, is also considered a potential landing spot.
