Lowell — Beginning on August 22 and continuing through October, 2023, the Lowell Regional Wastewater Utility (LRWWU) and its Contractor, Wright-Pierce, will undertake an extensive sewer system smoke testing program aimed at identifying potential issues within the City’s sewer system. The attached map provides an approximate schedule of the smoke testing that will be conducted in areas of the City.
Sewer smoke testing is a vital step in locating defects, leaks, and points of entry in the sanitary sewer system that are otherwise difficult to detect. By identifying these defects, LRWWU can develop an informed plan to improve the overall integrity of the sewer system.
It is important to note that during this process, residents and property owners may notice smoke that is white to gray in color emerging from building vent stacks, gutters, the ground, or from sewer manholes. The smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, odorless, and is not a fire hazard. The smoke is specifically designed to identify potential system defects, and it is not harmful to humans, pets, or property. The cooperation and understanding of our community during this important initiative are greatly appreciated. Door hangers will be placed on each residence/business 24 to 96 hours before smoke testing on their street beginning Monday, August 21, 2023. LRWWU and Wright-Pierce field crew members will be on site during testing and have identification badges. Each test takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
