The Lowell Cultural Council awarded $1,125 for the Annual Cambodian New Year Celebration at the Butler Middle School.

The celebration took place at the school on March 6th with over 250 families and community members in attendance.

Over 50 students participated in an 8-week-long afterschool program in partnership with Angkor Dance staff and former Butler alumni. Students learned traditional Cambodian dances, including the importance of cultural preservation of dances such as royal ballet.

The program is free to all students at Butler, supported by 21st Century Community Learning Center funding.

The celebration is in collaboration with the Angkor Dance Troupe, which has been partnered with the Butler Middle School for 31 years.

“Our partnership with Angkor highlights our commitment to supporting youth-led cultural programming in the city,” said Community School Manager Neyder Fernandez.

“Angkor is a leader in educating the community about the beauty of Cambodian culture,” added Butler School Principal Jaime Moody.

The Butler Middle School wished to thank the Lowell Cultural Council for their continued support of this meaningful community partnership. In a community as diverse as Lowell, their investment contributes to the economic vitality of the region and the promotion of access to the arts.
