Sixto DeJesus, who we revealed last week as the newest candidate for Lowell City Council, has ended speculation about whether he’d run a citywide campaign or in District 5.
DeJesus formally announced his candidacy through a Facebook post earlier this afternoon, and declared that he will mount an At-Large campaign. That decision had been the topic of much speculation in Lowell’s political bubble, including on recent InsideLowell Daily Pulse Podcasts, with the local banker keeping his cards close to the vest when contacted about our initial story last week.
“I am running for City Council because I care deeply about our community and want to actively address the critical issues that affect us all,” he wrote on Facebook. “From rising taxes and housing affordability to small business challenges and the need to amplify underrepresented voices, we can create solutions to these issues and build a stronger, more united Lowell. My goal is to bring new energy, fresh ideas, and a collaborative approach to local government.”
The three at-large council seats are currently occupied by Erik Gitschier, Rita Mercier and Vesna Nuon, who finished in that exact order in the 2023 race. 19-year old Ricky Thach also declared a citywide run last October.
If the three incumbents and two challengers who’ve already organized campaigns with the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance are on the ballot, two more candidates would need to throw their hat in the ring in order to create a Preliminary Election for the seat in September.
