An earthquake affecting an area from Philadelphia to Boston was felt here in Greater Lowell as well, with multiple reports of tremors coming into InsideLowell from Chelmsford and Lawrence.
The quake, which various reports have measured at anywhere from a 4.7-5.5 magnitude, appears to be centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. The quake was strong enough that the FAA issued ground stops at Newark Airport in New Jersey and JFK in New York.
Locally, we spoke to people who felt it near the Drum Hill Rotary in Chelmsford, Chelmsford Center and North Chelmsford. Another individual reported speaking to work colleagues who described being frightened by the shaking at the Riverwalk Complex in Lawrence. Others are reporting speaking to family members working in Boston who also felt the tremors.
We ourselves didn’t feel anything in our downtown Lowell offices, nor have we spoken to anyone who felt it while in Lowell. If you did, feel free to leave your location in the comments section below.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says there is a chance for aftershocks.
