Lowell – The Dominican community in Lowell will commemorate the 181st anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence with an official flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.
The event takes place on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Lowell City Hall, 375 Merrimack St, Lowell, MA.
The celebration, open to the public, features music, surprises, and the participation of community leaders.
For several years, the organization Dominicanos en Lowell has led this initiative to strengthen the presence and recognition of the Dominican community in the city. Among the main organizers of this event are Maylis Brito, Vladimir Saldaña, and Felicita “Fela” Espinal, who have worked tirelessly to preserve Dominican traditions and cultural heritage.
The Dominican Republic declared its independence on February 27, 1844, ending 22 years of Haitian occupation. The independence movement was led by patriots Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Ramón Matías Mella, who formed La Trinitaria, a secret society that fought for the country’s freedom. Since then, Dominicans celebrate this date each year as a symbol of sovereignty and national pride.
Organizers invite the entire Lowell community to join this celebration, highlighting the importance of Dominican independence and the contributions of Dominicans to the city.
