Lowell Lacrosse Weekly Spotlight – Week of July 13, 2025

Each week, Lowell Youth Lacrosse hosts a youth clinic for players going into Grades 1-4 that blends fundamental skills with leadership and mentorship. Led by Lowell High School student-athletes, the clinic continues to grow in both attendance and impact.

This weekly column will highlight the high school players making a difference and spotlight one standout participant from the clinic.

Thank you to Evan Millett for working on this with me!

Clinic Highlights

This week’s clinic drew twice as many participants from across the Mill City as previous weeks. The focus was on footwork, passing and attacking the goal. The session included some one-on-one work for the group of players trying out lacrosse for the very first time. All sessions end by Coach Bo breaking down a huddle of youth players squeezed between the high schoolers with a singular “LOWELL!”

Coaches and volunteers noted a strong sense of camaraderie among both the high school mentors and the younger players. “It really is incredible that this many high school boys are willing to volunteer every week,” one of the parents was overheard saying.

Featured High School Player: GRADY AVILA

Grady Avila, a senior at Lowell High School, serves as this week’s featured player. The goalie for the varsity lacrosse team, Avila has played lacrosse for 2 years and has become a steady presence at the weekly clinics.

When asked, coach Bo said, “Grady is a lead by example type kid. He always shows up with a hard working mentality whenever he’s inside the lines. The younger kids have taken a liking to his constant encouragement and he’s always motivating them to continue to try to become better with each rep.”

Player Profile

  • Grade: Class of 2026
  • Position: Goalie
  • Favorite lacrosse memory: “Getting a shutout win on Marcus’s senior night this year.”
  • Personal goals for the season: “States”
  • Fun fact: Grady is also the goalie for the Lowell High Hockey team. He just started playing lacrosse as the goalie as a sophomore.

Clinic Player of the Week: ROWAN DONOVAN

The Clinic Player of the Week is selected based on effort, attitude and growth. This week’s honoree is Rowan Donovan, age 7, who demonstrated outstanding focus and improvement during drills and scrimmages.

“Rowan is part of an extremely promising group of eight players going into their third season as only 2nd Graders. Rowan is as fierce of a competitor as there is. Rowan’s determination to get better is evident in every rep that he takes. He’s a great kid,” according to one of his coaches.

What’s Next

The next clinic is scheduled for next Tuesday (July 22nd) at 5:30 PM at Carvalho Field. The focus will be on continuing to develop the skills of the current players; and just as important introducing any newcomers to the basics of the game. All skill levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring water, sticks and appropriate footwear.
