The owners of the new Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) franchise set to play at UMass Lowell’s LeLacheur Park will announce the team’s name and branding next Tuesday, alongside UML and City of Lowell leaders.
The ownership group, which will also be announced at that time, will be on hand to share their vision for the team and its commitment to the Mill City as the seventh franchise in the New England league.
Playing through the late spring and summer months, the FCBL is a showcase for emerging talent among collegiate athletes and has seen a number of former stars make it to the Major Leagues, including 2025 Houston Astros All-Star Shortstop, Jeremy Pena, and Boston native Sal Frelick, who plays for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Most recently, league alumnus Emmett Sheehan appeared in three World Series games for the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitching a scoreless 7th inning and notching two strikeouts in the Dodgers thrilling Game 7 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Although he didn’t appear in the 2025 World Series, Ben Casparius pitched in the Series for the 2024 champion Dodgers.
In July, league and UMass Lowell officials signed onto a partnership to field the new team, which will play home games beginning next May at LeLacheur Park, also home to the UMass Lowell River Hawks. Connections between the league and university have remained strong for years, as a number of River Hawk student athletes have played for league teams, including the Nashua Silver Knights in New Hampshire.
Besides the new owners, attendees are expected to include UMass President Marty Meehan, UMass Lowell Chancellor Julie Chen, Lowell City Manager Tom Golden, along with other state and city officials.
