Corey Belanger, who last night was appointed to replace John Leahy as District 3 (Belvidere) representative on the Lowell City Council, took the oath of office earlier this morning.
Belanger visited the Clerk’s Office, where he was sworn in by Michael Geary at 9:30am.
He previously served two terms on the board from 2014-2018, before losing his seat in the 2017 election. The Belvidere resident narrowly missed winning a seat in the 2019 and 2023 at large races.
“It is an honor and a privilege to serve the city again,” Belanger tells InsideLowell. “I look forward to working with all of my colleagues and getting down to the business of serving the residents of District 3 immediately.”
Belanger’s swearing in culminates a winding process over how to fill the vacancy created by Leahy’s departure.
After receiving accolades and expressing gratitude at the opportunity to serve in office, Leahy exited last night’s session before the process for how to replace him played out.
He had tendered his resignation to the Solicitor’s Office and City Clerk earlier in the evening, effective upon the meeting’s completion.
