Maddie Smith, the youngest of local golf’s three Smith sisters, captured the Massachusetts Girls Junior Amateur Championship today in dramatic fashion.
The 15-year old, who led the tourney heading into the final round, defeated Kaitlyn Doe in a playoff to claim the title. Smith bogeyed six holes on the day, including 3 of the final 4, before rebounding with a birdie on the first playoff hole to hold finally put her challenger away. Smith’s late struggles allowed Doe to make up a 6-stroke deficit heading into the day, but in the end, the soon-to-be Westford Academy Sophomore had the answer when it counted.
Earlier this summer, Morgan smith captured the New England Women’s Amateur Championship and Lowell Women’s City Golf Tournament crown. Not to be outdone, Molly Smith became the first woman to ever qualify for the Massachusetts Amateur Championship.
The girls’ father, Phil, is an 8-time Lowell City Golf Tournament winner.
