Chancer McPatrick, the Kentucky Derby hopeful owned by Lowell native Sean Flanagan, will have to wait until Tuesday April 8 to earn his way into the Run for the Roses.

The Bluegrass Stakes, originally scheduled for Saturday April 5, has been postponed three days due to the heavy rainfall moving through the Lexington, Kentucky area, where the race is run.

The morning line currently lists Chancer McPatrick as the the fourth choice among betting favorites, at 7-2 odds. A first or second place finish clinches an automatic berth for the 3-year old colt in the May 3 Kentucky Derby. A third place showing likely qualifies him as well.

Chancer McPatrick is coming off an impressive second place finish in the Tampa Bay Derby back on March 8.

Flanagan’s mother Helen, a former Assistant Deputy Superintendent for Lowell Public Schools, came within a nose of being named to the top position in 2000, ultimately losing a 4-3 School Committee vote to Karla Brooks Baehr in the race to replace George Tsapatsaris back in 2000.

Flanagan’s brother David is currently the President at Longmeadow Golf Club, located in Lowell’s Belvidere neighborhood.

The Bluegrass is a Grade 1 Stakes race run at Keeneland in Lexington. Post-time for the Mile and 1/8 trek around the oval is scheduled for 5:52pm.
