Tomorrow won’t be the first day of school for at least one group of Mill City youngsters after all.
A message from Pawtucketville Memorial School Principal Michael Munroe informed parents the school will not be ready tomorrow after mold was found “growing on hard surfaces in several classrooms.” The mold was found during a walk-through of the school building by the Lowell Public Schools Facilities Department and DPW personnel last week.
Servpro was brought in to mitigate the situation and conduct a thorough cleaning of the impacted classrooms, which began Saturday. Impacted teachers were first notified Sunday evening.
Servpro finished cleaning the classrooms today. However, three more classrooms were then found to have mold. After talking to the teachers union and out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to close the entire school until the cleaning is complete and the air quality testing is done, which is expected to be tomorrow afternoon.
Testing is expected to conclude by Tuesday afternoon, allowing for the school to open Wednesday August 30 for Grades 1-4. Kindergarten and Pre-K classes are scheduled to begin next Tuesday September 5.
