LOWELL – John R. “Jack” McGovern, 92, who was a longtime resident of the Centralville section of Lowell, died on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at Regal Care in Lowell. He was born in Lowell on January 7, 1933, son of the late Mary (Mullaney) and Frank McGovern.
After graduating from Lowell High School, he began working as a teller at the Union National Bank in Lowell. Jack went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Upon returning from the army Jack continued his work at the Union National Bank, eventually working in the Trust Department. One of his greatest accomplishments was completing his degree at Northeastern University in Boston, while still employed at the bank. Jack eventually went to work at Central Savings Bank in Lowell and finally finished his banking career of over 40 years at Enterprise Bank in Lowell before retiring in 2002.
In his younger days, Jack played Legion Baseball. He was an outfielder with a rocket for an arm and a grip of steel. He was also a skier, bowler and tennis player. Jack was also an avid golfer, especially in retirement, where he played golf at Amesbury Country Club.
Jack always had a love of music, especially Elvis Presley and Bobby Vinton. Jack’s own musical talent lied in the piano. He was an accomplished piano player, who could be heard many a day “tickling the ivories” through the windows on a warm summer day.
Jack is survived by his two nieces, Nancy McGovern of Lowell, Patricia Ann Gormley and her husband, Brian of Hooksett, NH; his nephew: Michael McGovern and his wife, Joan of Plymouth; his great-nieces, Faith and Maggie and his great-nephew, Jack.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Francis McGovern as well as his two sisters-in-law Pat and Marilyn.
