2024 Lipman Award Winner Announced

2024 Lipman Award Winner Chance Lee

The Pollard Memorial Library Foundation is delighted to announce the winner of the third Elinor Lipman Award for Writing.

The prize honors Elinor Lipman, a distinguished, prolific, and much-loved author born and raised in Lowell, by awarding a prize for a work of fiction or creative non-fiction written by a Lowell resident or a student at Middlesex Community College or the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Submissions were reviewed in a blinded manner by the judges: Elinor Lipman, literary editor Pilar Garcia-Brown and last year’s Lipman Award winner poet Lillian-Yvonne Bertram.

For more information about the judges, please see: https://lowelllibrary.org/get-involved/foundation/elinor-lipman-award/.

The judges unanimously selected the story entitled “The Library Turtle” by Chance Lee as the winner. Chance is a Lowell resident and Assistant Director at the Tyngsboro Public Library.

Distinguised Mention Award Winner Sally DeAngelis

In addition, the judges decided to recognize another submission with a Distinguished Mention award. This award went to the work “Pair of Angels” by Sally L. DeAngelis. Sally is a Lowell resident and writes poems, short stories and essays.

The awards will be given during a ceremony in the Community Room of the Pollard Memorial Library, 401 Merrimack Street, at 6pm on November 7, 2024. The public is welcome; to attend, please RSVP to Lipmanaward@gmail.com.

The Elinor Lipman Award recognizes the importance of literacy and learning in the City of Lowell for the lives of its residents. The prize was founded through a generous donation by Loom Press and is now funded by the Pollard Memorial Library Foundation.

The Pollard Memorial Library Foundation (https://lowelllibrary.org/get-involved/foundation/ and https://www.pollardmemoriallibraryfoundation.com/) supports and advocates for the Library.
