Westford Police and Fire Departments responded to a serious industrial accident at 540 Groton Road Friday. First responders arrived to find a worker with an upper extremity trapped in a conveyor belt, having sustained extensive injuries.
Due to the complex nature of the entrapment, a large-scale mutual aid response was immediately activated. Specialized teams called to the scene to assist with the rescue included the Essex County Technical Rescue Team for advanced extrication capabilities, surgical teams from Lowell General Hospital and Lahey Hospital to provide specialized on-scene medical support, Lowell General Hospital Paramedics and EMS teams for advanced life support, and Boston MedFlight for rapid critical care transport.
The patient was successfully extricated at 1:30 p.m. and quickly airlifted by Boston MedFlight to a regional Level 1 trauma center for further advanced care.
The Westford Fire Department extended its deepest gratitude to the Westford Police personnel, Lowell General Hospital Surgery, Lahey Hospital Surgery, Lowell General Paramedics and EMS teams, Boston MedFlight, and the Essex County Technical Rescue Team. Their seamless collaboration, skill, and dedication during this highly challenging incident were vital to successfully freeing the patient.
Additionally, they thanked the Tyngsborough Fire Department for providing station coverage and ensuring continuous emergency protection for the town during the incident.
The incident remains under investigation.
