Draper Labs, the Lowell Innovation Network Corridor’s (LINC) anchor tenant, heads back in front of the Lowell Historic Board next Monday with updated plans for their proposed Integrated Microelectronics Production and Advanced Chip Technology (IMPACT) Center in the Hamilton Canal Innovation District.

When they do, it will be for a building larger than originally proposed and approved by the Lowell City Council in late March.

The new plans, available on the Historic Board’s June 8 meeting agenda, call for a three-story structure covering 118,828 square feet instead of the two-story 75,000 sq. ft. design. The expanded design, topping off at 72-feet and 4-inches tall, is necessary to accommodate higher than anticipated demand the Cambridge based companies operations in Lowell.

Draper Laboratory, an American non-profit research and development organization, specializes in the design, development, and deployment of advanced technology solutions to problems in national security, defense, space exploration, health care and energy.

The organization is best known for its work in national defense and with NASA. According to its website, Draper employs more than 2,300 people across twelve United States campuses and generates over $850-million in revenue.

The Historic Board application describes the development as a state-of-the-art microelectronics manufacturing facility for Draper Labs, offering a modern and efficient environment for research, production, and collaboration while respecting the historic fabric of the area.

Key features include specialized electronics laboratories, flexible conference spaces, traditional and open offices, as well as a café designed to foster interaction and support productivity.

The facility’s architectural form and uses are intended to complement the surrounding Hamilton Canal District, promoting innovation while contributing to the district’s historic and vibrant urban character.

Draper already occupies space as part of UMass Lowell’s LINC project, an $800-million development on the University’s East Campus.

The organization was awarded $25-million toward the HCID parcel last October as part of Governor Maura Healey’s SHIELD initiative.
