On Friday, August 28, the energy, theatrics, and unforgettable music of Queen will fill Lowell Memorial Auditorium as Gary Mullen & The Works present their acclaimed tribute show, One Night of Queen.
For two full hours, the U.K. band turns the historic Mill City venue into a high-voltage celebration of one of rock’s most iconic acts—complete with dazzling lights, powerful sound, and a frontman whose vocal and physical portrayal of Freddie Mercury has earned widespread praise.
Gary Mullen’s journey began with pure passion.
A lifelong Queen fan and talented singer, he never planned a career as a Mercury interpreter. That changed in 2000 when his wife and mother secretly entered him in the Granada TV talent show Stars in Their Eyes.
Mullen won the Live Grand Final with a record-breaking 864,838 votes—more than double the runner-up. The performance was so strong that he went on to represent the U.K. in the Euro edition of the show. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response, he formed The Works in 2002 and launched One Night of Queen.
What started as a passion project has grown into one of the most successful Queen tribute shows worldwide. For the past five years the band has averaged more than 150 performances annually across multiple countries, consistently drawing rave reviews.
Joining Mullen on stage are David Brockett on guitar, Jon Halliwell on drums, and Malcolm Gentles on keyboards. All three are highly skilled musicians in their own right and share a deep passion for Queen’s catalog.
Together they deliver a fast-paced, tightly rehearsed set of classic after classic, enhanced by an exciting production of lights and sound. Mullen’s stage presence and choreography stay true to Freddie’s legendary style, creating an experience that feels both authentic and exhilarating.

He was personally invited by Brian May to attend a Queen + Paul Rodgers show in Cardiff and was left speechless when introduced to the guitarist backstage.
Off the road, he keeps in shape with weights and yoga, records occasional voiceovers and original material (including the album Blood, Sweat and Beers with longtime collaborator Barry Kelly), and spends free time at home in the U.K. with his family and two dogs.
