Partners gathered to cut the ribbon on the new and improved boat ramp on the Merrimack River.
CHELMSFORD–The Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Office of Fishing & Boating Access (OFBA) today celebrated the completion of a new and improved boat ramp in Chelmsford, expanding access to the Merrimack River.
State and local leaders, community partners, and public safety officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to highlight the opening of the new facility.
“This is an important investment in our public outdoors for Chelmsford and the entire Merrimack Valley. It expands public access to one of our region’s greatest natural assets while improving emergency response capabilities on the river,” said State Representative Rodney Elliott (D—Lowell). “As one of my first initiatives since being sworn in, I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this project a reality and look forward to seeing residents and visitors safely enjoy the Merrimack for years to come.”
Updates to this facility improve public access to the Merrimack River, one of our state’s most popular fishing and boating locations.
Located off Wotton Street, the site features a new single lane 15’ wide cast-in-place concrete boat ramp with prop-wash protection, and parking for vehicles with boat trailers or cartop boats.
“The Merrimack River is one of Massachusetts’ largest and important rivers,” said DFG Commissioner Tom O’Shea. “This improved boat ramp opens the door for more people in the greater Lowell area and statewide to experience the Merrimack through boating, fishing, and adventure. It’s an excellent example of collaborating with our local communities get people outdoors to enjoy nature right in their neighborhoods.”
The project was made possible through terms of a Land Management Agreement (LMA) made between the Town of Chelmsford and the Office of Fishing and Boating Access.
Additionally, the facility will improve public safety on the Merrimack River by providing enhanced emergency access for police, fire and rescue operations. The new ramp ensures emergency access for the Merrimack River Task Force, led by the Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) in partnership with the US Coast Guard and public safety agencies with surrounding communities.
“Safe, reliable access to our waterways benefits everyone,” said MEP Colonel John Monaghan. “This new launch gives first responders the access they need to respond quickly during emergencies while ensuring residents and visitors can safety enjoy the river for fishing, boating, and other outdoor recreation.”
The Department of Fish & Game (DFG) Office of Fishing and Boating Access (OFBA) provides access to public waters in Massachusetts, including great ponds, rivers, and coasts. The division constructs and maintains boat access sites, shore fishing areas, and sport fishing piers at more than 300 locations.
