Breaking News: Ste Jeanne d’Arc School Ruled Out as Shelter Site

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has moved away from the former Ste. Jeanne d’Arc School in Lowell as a potential site for emergency shelter to house immigrants.

A Spokesperson for Governor Maura Healey reached out to InsideLowell this afternoon to say “in regards to your article about the Ste. Jeanne d’Arc School, I can confirm that after further inspection, this site was determined to not be a viable option for a shelter.”

“As previously stated, the city of Lowell has always been a leader in assisting those in need,” said District 1 City Councilor Dan Rourke. “I thank the governor for her due diligence in what is the best use of Ste Jeanne D’Arc School. Now the city and the school department can continue their partnership to best utilizing the building for our students.”

How many immigrants the State is looking to house in Lowell and whether other sites in the city are still under consideration, is not yet clear. However sources tell InsideLowell that Massachusetts is already struggling to find housing for thousands of families who are currently residents of the state.
