Lowell Hosts Angkor Dance Troupe Cultural Exchange Collaboration

LOWELL – The City of Lowell and the Angkor Dance Troupe (ADT) are pleased to announce the cultural exchange performance of Reamker, a collaboration between the ADT and Selepak Khmer of Paris. This is their second performance together, and the very first time the two dance groups will join forces in America. This free and exciting one-night-only event will open to all to enjoy as a part of Lowell’s Summer Music Series on Sunday, August 27th, 2023 at 6 PM at the Boarding House Park.

Prior to the performance, Mayor Sokhary Chau will be holding a reception for the ADT on August 22nd at the Mayor’s Reception Room at 5:30. This will be a meet-and-greet, where members will be able to meet the City Councilors and tour the historic Council Chamber and City Hall. This event too is free and fully open to the public, allowing everyone to meet with the dance groups prior to their performance.

“I’m very excited to welcome the Selepak Khmer of Paris to our wonderful city.” Mayor Chau said, “We have been the host to many different artisan performers, and we are honored to continue the valued tradition of Cambodian dance in Lowell. Thank you to the Angkor Dance Troupe for making this possible.”

Angkor Dance Troupe’s Cultural exchange programs have seen the troupe hosting Master Teachers and students from global Cambodian performing arts organizations, such as the Royal University of Cambodia, as a part of an ongoing multi-year effort. In January of 2020, members of the Angkor Dance Troupe traveled to France, performing a reinvented classical dance drama called Ramayana in collaboration with the French Selepak Khmer Association.

The story of Reamker focuses on Preah Ream, a Prince who was exiled to the forest through no fault of his own for fourteen years. Following many adventures, including the abduction of his wife Neang Seda by the evil giant Reap, Preah Ream eventually rescues her with the help of an Army of monkeys guided by Hanuman. Preah Ream and Neang Seda return home triumphantly, with the Prince reclaiming his throne.

ADT Executive Directive Bora Chiemruom said, “It is a historic moment for both prominent global organizations, the Angkor Dance Troupe and Selepak Khmer, to collaborate and bring this masterpiece to Lowell MA. We didn’t think we could elevate the artistry and work of last year’s production, but this is proving to be even more elaborate and grandeur. What’s unique about this year’s show is we will have five master teachers from four different countries teaching and perfecting the movement.”
