Chelmsford – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will be hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 6:00 PM in the Chelmsford Police Station Training Room, 2 Olde North Road Chelmsford, MA 01824, to discuss the Chelmsford-Lowell Bridge Bundle Project and solicit questions. You can read more about this public meeting on the event page and download a meeting flyer in multiple languages.
MassDOT will fully replace two bridges in the Town of Chelmsford. These include Westford Street over I-495 in Chelmsford and Route 3A (Gorham Street) over I-495 on the Chelmsford/Lowell line.
The new bridges will improve the overall clearance and geometry of the bridge crossings. Roadway reconstruction work will improve vehicle safety and provide improvements for pedestrian and bicycle travel.
Each bridge will be replaced in two phases. Phase I is anticipated to begin in late June 2025. During Phase I, each bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic for 12 – 18 months. Pedestrian access will be maintained across each bridge during these closures, and bicyclist access will be maintained for Westford Street during the closure. A local detour route will be implemented at each bridge for all vehicles. When Phase I is completed, the bridges will reopen to all traffic.
Early action work is anticipated to begin in April 2025, with Phase I construction to commence on both bridges simultaneously beginning in June 2025.
For more information on the project and to sign up for advisories and notices, please visit the website at www.mass.gov/info-details/about-the-chelmsford-lowell-bridge-bundle-replacement-project. For questions or to report issues related to construction, please contact ChelmsfordLowellBridges@dot.state.ma.us.
MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays. Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution. The schedule for this major infrastructure project is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.

What about the Rourke bridge seems like it keeps getting put off. This bridge is in horrible shape. People are afraid to drive over it. I know I pray everytime I drive over it.
What about the Roark Bridge?

We need the Rourke bridge much more not sure if it’s state work
Rourke bridge was so called being worked on months ago but nothing has was done. Why tell us that bridges are getting fixed when there not. I drive over this bridge everyday day. It’s unsafe .
Agreed! The Rourke Bridge is a a “death trap” waiting to happen. When is this bridge scheduled for replacement? It would be nice to have clear information for replacement of this bridge.
