CHELMSFORD — Chief Colin Spence is proud to report that two Chelmsford Police officers, Chelmsford firefighters, EMTs from Pridestar Trinity EMS and Lowell General Hospital Paramedics worked together to save a life on Monday.
On Monday, Sept. 9, at approximately 7 p.m., Officer Derek Tyros and Officer Jake Hartshorn were dispatched to a home for a report of an unconscious man who had no pulse.
Officers Tyros and Hartshorn arrived to find a relative of the patient providing CPR using Emergency Medical Dispatch instructions provided over the phone by Chelmsford Dispatcher Andrew Houmiller.
Officers Tyros and Hartshorn took over and provided critical, life-saving care using CPR and an automated external defibrillator. The officers continued providing care as Chelmsford Fire Capt. Danielle Koutsoufis, Firefighter Rob Albon, and Firefighter Michael Noone arrived and began assisting.
A short time later, Pridestar Trinity EMS arrived and took over care, and they were joined by Lowell General Hospital Paramedics.
The patient, who eventually regained a pulse, was transported to Lowell General Hospital, where they continue to recover.
“I want to recognize the quick response and life-saving work of Officer Tyros and Officer Hartshorn, as well as Dispatcher Houmiller, the Chelmsford Fire Department, and both Pridestar Trinity EMS and Lowell General Hospital Paramedics,” said Chief Spence. “The teamwork these individuals and agencies employed saved a life on Monday, and we could not be more proud of them.”
Officer Tyros has been with the Chelmsford Police Department for about two years. Officer Hartshorn joined Chelmsford Police as a dispatcher in 2023, and became a sworn officer in May of 2024.
