Chief Golner Retiring from LPD

InsideLowell has learned that Lowell Police Superintendent Barry Golner will retire from the Department as of April 30, 2023. Golner announced the decision in an email to fellow officers earlier this morning.

In an InsideView podcast with Teddy Panos on February 1st, the interim Chief expressed a desire to stay on as Superintendent for one more year. He was named to the interim post in March of 2022 by then City Manager Eileen Donoghue. Golner has yet to respond to requests for a statement on why the decision to retire was reached.

The April 30th retirement date announced by Chief Golner should allow plenty of time for current City Manager Tom Golden to reach a decision on a replacement and allow for a smooth transition within the department. Golden did not respond to requests for comment, as well.
