Class Dismissed? City Councilor McDonough May Leave Teaching Position

Freshman Lowell City Councilor Sean McDonough, whose first two months on the government board have featured numerous discussions about what issues he can and can’t weigh in on surrounding the city’s schools, may be resigning as a Special Education teacher at Lowell High.

Multiple sources tell InsideLowell that McDonough submitted a resignation letter, effective 5pm Sunday, March 1, and that his students were informed of the decision this week.

However, those sources also tell us there are still discussions taking place and that the Special Education teacher may change his mind if certain things can be worked out regarding ethics issues that have become a distraction in the political arena.

McDonough did not respond to our request for comment on the matter. A spokesperson for the School Department would only confirm that a resignation letter was submitted and that “it takes effect this Sunday.”

McDonough has recused himself from multiple city council votes and publicly admitted to regularly contacting the State Ethics Commission to seek clarity as individual motions pop up on a week-by-week basis.

Most notably, he recused himself from a February 3 discussion about a joint City-Schools Facilities Department, only to address the council as a private citizen from the podium where the general public speaks on issues.
