Coming Attraction: Luna 2.0?

Yesterday, we reported on the former St. Jean Baptiste Church on Merrimack Street potentially becoming the new home for many Mill No. 5 businesses. That story prompted an interesting follow up discussion this morning regarding the future of another mainstay from the Jackson Street mill building.

A source close to the situation tells InsideLowell that conversations are underway for a key community partner to house The Luna Theater, and that those conversations have progressed to a level where an announcement could be made early in the new year.

The Luna Theater, known for showcasing independent films as well as many classics, was considered by many the “linchpin” of the unique community of businesses operating out of Mill No. 5.

The theater was one of the businesses owned and operated by James Lichoulis, Jr., who gifted the property to Lowell Community Charter Public School in late November.

While refusing to pinpoint the specific location being discussed, our source did indicate The Luna wouldn’t stray too far from it’s former downtown home.

Coupled with the news about St. Jean Baptiste, the latest Luna Theater revelation is yet more welcome news for the many loyal fans of Mill No. 5 who were crestfallen when news struck that one of their favorite hangouts and shopping locations would be going away in 2025

Amazing how people now care about Mill #5. The place was empty for the past 5 years. What makes people think that anyone will go once it relocated anywhere?

  2. Jeremy says:

Empty….I have gone every weekend for the last five years and it was always bustling with people. Not sure when you were there.

  3. Lisa says:

Well that was a bit rude. I’ve never seen it “empty” and I’ve been going for years.
