Councilor Mercier Has a Vote; Did She Ask For It?

As the speculation over who will be the next Mayor of Lowell continues, another Councilor has weighed in with his vote.

District 2 (Centralville) Councilor Corey Robinson released a statement stating his support for long-time councilor, and former Mayor, Rita Mercier to serve in the position beginning in January of 2024. Robinson’s statement reads:

“Now that the election results are in, one of the first items to be addressed will be who is our city’s next mayor. Without knowing who would be newly elected or who would be returning, it was impossible to pledge support for anybody. I am not sure how you could make a commitment to someone without even knowing who may be interested? I would like to publicly commit my support to a colleague that has responded to constituents for 28 years and will have been doing so for a total of 30 years by the end of her next term. I am committing to support the longest serving member of our elected body, Councilor Rita Mercier for our next mayor.”

Despite rumors she may be interested, Councilor Mercier has yet to publicly announce herself as a candidate for Mayor. Repeated requests for comment from InsideLowell have been met with respectful refusal to even think about the issue prior to Election Day, and silence after the results were tallied.

Robinson becomes the first councilor to pledge his vote for Mercier as Mayor. Fellow Councilor Dan Rourke already has five votes committed, including his own. Councilor Vesna Nuon has sealed the support of District 4 Councilor Wayne Jenness.
