District 3 Appointment Field Set to Nine

Tuesday’s Lowell City Council Agenda is out and so, too, are the names of the candidates seeking support to be appointed to replace John Leahy as the District 3 (Belvidere) representative:

Three of the names were already public, as both Corey Belanger and Rithy Uong confirmed their interest in the position to InsideLowell last week. Belanger and Uong have previously served on the council.

Erin Gendron, the Daughter-in-Law of former councilor and school committee member Steve Gendron, stated her interest on Facebook earlier in the week.

Daniel Finn has run for council in the past, under the old At-Large system, while Martin Burke sought the 17th Middlesex State Representative seat in 2012.

Reverend Karina Fontanez, Belinda Juran, Ronald DiBerto and Adam Mitchell are newcomers to the political scene.

Still unresolved is exactly how this will all go down Tuesday night, and whether there is even an appointment made that night, as was scheduled during the July 9th council meeting.

The Home Rule Petition requiring a Special Election to fill vacancies made its way through the Massachusetts State Senate yesterday, and multiple sources told us earlier in the week that it would likely speed its way through the House of Representatives as well.

With a “Motion to Reconsider” the council’s vote to fill the seat via appointment at the July 23rd meeting on the coming agenda, there is a possibility that vote gets reversed and that a majority of the council could then vote to hold a special election within 120 days of Leahy’s resignation, as is required by the Home Rule Petition.
