DRACUT — Chief Peter Bartlett reports that the Dracut Police Department is seeking public assistance as they investigate who left approximately 49 guinea pigs near Beaver Brook off Lakeview Avenue on Monday.
On Monday, Aug. 5, at about 12:30 p.m., Dracut Animal Control was notified that someone found several guinea pigs on a small trail between the Beaver Brook Mill and Beaver Brook.
Animal Control responded and found 49 guinea pigs, who all appeared lethargic and in poor condition.
The guinea pigs were in need of veterinary care, so they were taken to the Lowell Humane Society, where they remain today. They are not immediately available for adoption because of their conditions.
“It was evident that the guinea pigs had been intentionally disposed of in a location where they had no means to fend for themselves or escape their dire situation,” said Animal Control Officer Colleen Morse. “Given the abundance of resources available for the care and rehoming of animals, such neglect and abandonment are unacceptable. This situation indicates a serious lapse in responsibility and compassion.”
Dracut Police are investigating who left the guinea pigs behind, and are asking for public assistance from anyone with information.
Anyone with information is asked to call 978-957-2123.
