After two-plus months of closure and intense road work, Shattuck Street in Downtown Lowell will re-open to vehicular traffic tomorrow.
A downtown employee who spoke to the workers for the private contractor repairing the roadway relayed the information to us earlier this afternoon. Early this evening, the re-opening was confirmed by Assistant City Manager Shawn Machado.
Machado indicated vehicles would be able to use the street “before the end of they day,” though he did want to reinforce the caveat that “it is expected.”
Anyone traveling the street in recent years will recall a bumpy, jarring, tire-rattling drive.
Crews began the painstaking process of digging up the street in late August. They then began shoring up and leveling the undersurface, before meticulously replacing the cobblestones one-by-one.
Until today, much of that progress had been concealed by fencing and a tarp that largely blocked.
However, the removal of the fence covering revealed what appears to be a much-improved, flat surface that should be far kinder to your vehicle.
There is still a small segment of the thruway close to the Market Street side where the cobblestones have not yet been put back in place. That work is expected to conclude tomorrow, at which point the green light will be given and motor vehicles can once again make the connection between Market, Merrimack and Middle Streets.
