H.R. Director Mary Callery Calls it a Career

`

Mary Callery, who worked 40-years for the City of Lowell, announced her retirement effective December 1, 2023.

Callery served as Human Relations Director for the last 11-years.

She formally informed Manager Tom Golden of the decision in a letter last Friday, saying the decision was made “with a heavy heart” and that she loved every aspect of her job.

“It was a difficult decision to make,” Callery tells InsideLowell. “I thoroughly enjoyed my 40 years working for the City of Lowell. My first grandchild is due in December so now is the right time to retire and enjoy this new chapter with my family.”

The H.R. Department has been the topic of much City Council discussion over the last few years, as the city struggled to fill positions after Covid. As recently as January of 2022, there were 65-vacancies across city departments. As of today, there are only 20-jobs listed on the city’s website.
