Ken Harring has resigned as Head Coach of the UMass Lowell Baseball team, stepping away from the post after 19-years running the program. The announcement was made on the River Hawks athletics website, with Harring issuing the following statement:
“I want to thank the university, department, colleagues, coaches, and most importantly, the players that I have coached for the last 19 years at UMass Lowell. I am proud of our many accomplishments over so many years. After some reflection, I have made the difficult decision to voluntarily resign my position at the university and move on to the next chapter of my career. I wish to avoid being a distraction to the university and program that I am so proud of and that has been such an important part of my life for so many years. I wish the university and the program, and most of all, the student-athletes all the best successes both on the field and off. It has been an honor and pleasure to have served as the head coach and be a part of the success story of the UMass Lowell baseball team.”
Harring was caught up in controversy last month, when former player Cedric Rose claimed he was kicked off the team due to racism.
UML Athletic Director Peter Casey issued a statement, saying “I want to thank Coach Ken Harring for his years of dedicated service to the university, particularly the baseball program. The university wishes him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Harring took over the program after the 2003 season, replacing legendary coach Jim Stone, who coached for 37-years and is a member of the River Hawks Hall of Fame.
Associate Head Coach Nick Barese was named interim head coach for the 2023-2024 season. He joined the program in December of 2021 after seven seasons as the Head Coach at Merrimack College.
